Last year at this time\, the garlic mustard pulling season was almost over. This year it has barely begun! Scouting missions of the participating preserves found some with a decent amount\, while it was just beginning to sprout at others. Chinquapin and Lexington are out. Hayes and now Merwin (South Gate) are in! You will have the opportunity to choose your preferred location when registering. \n~~~ \nGrab your gardening gloves and pick a ParkLands Preserves for a friendly competition to see which preserve can get rid of the most garlic mustard! Garlic mustard is an invasive plant from Europe that crowds out and takes over native spring wildflowers\, including our gorgeous bluebells. The best way to get rid of it is by hand\, pulling it from the ground. All ages can take part and we’ll give you all the training you need to eradicate this species! \nWe will have team leaders ready to go at Hayes and Merwin South Gate. SUMMARY:Bird Watching & Eagle Viewing
DESCRIPTION:This is a not-to-be-missed event\, appropriate for birdwatchers from novice to expert! Experienced birders will take groups on the trails at Letcher-Basin Land & Water Reserve to search for the birds that live there and pass through. The latest sightings have included various woodpeckers\, chickadees\, bluebirds\, turkey vultures\, native sparrows\, and many more species. Along the hike\, we will have a spotting scope set on an eagles’ nest! Two adult eagles have been raising three eaglets in this nest\, and while we can’t guarantee it (nature does its own thing)\, they have been reliably spotted for weeks. Nature guide extraordinaire\, Mary Jo Adams\, has been watching and photographing the nests at Letcher Basin for years! She will give a history of the adults and eaglets she has seen grow and return year after year. There will be a trailer ride that can accommodate those that do not wish to walk. \nCost is $5/person. DESCRIPTION:Our bike ride is back! \nParkLands Foundation will be hosting our 8th annual bike ride on Saturday\, July 12\, 2025. Support ParkLands’ mission of preserving prairie and forest habitat along the Mackinaw River\, making it one of the cleanest rivers in Illinois! We will have a 20 and 50 mile route as well as a 100 kilometer ride that wind through central Illinois and some of our properties on paved roads. The routes will all begin and end at Keller Park Pavilion\, 699 N Elm St\, Lexington\, IL. \n$50 for each rider. It needs some sprucing up and we need your help! We plan to clear the Loop Trail of debris by raking\, picking up sticks\, and making sure logs are moved off to the side. If we have enough people\, we’ll have some folks work on the invasives around the wooden bridge. \nParticipants should wear long pants/sleeves\, work gloves\, suntan lotion/bug spray\, and bring a water bottle. We’ll provide any needed equipment\, a water jug for refills\, and snacks. This is a free event with the option to purchase lunch ($20) or bring your own. \nOur Merwin Preserve South Gate\, located at 20183 P J Keller Hwy\, Lexington\, IL 61753 will be the site for an optional hike at 9:30 a.m. Experienced guides will lead and highlight important features on this 2-mile trail located at the south entrance to the Merwin Preserve. Further details and directions will be sent upon registration. \nAt 11:30\, at the nearby Lexington Community Center\, 207 W Main St\, Lexington\, IL 61753\, attendees will have time to visit with various Committee Representatives to learn what these committees do and where to lend your skills. A Tony’s Taco Bar lunch ($20 payment at registration\, or bring your own) will take place starting at 12:00 p.m. and presentations will begin shortly thereafter. We’ll look back at the accomplishments of the past year and look ahead to our future.
