DESCRIPTION:Our bike ride is back! \nWho would like to go for a bike ride by some beautiful restored prairie and woodlands along the Mackinaw River this summer?  ParkLands will be hosting our 7th annual bike ride on July 13\, 2024. Won’t you join us and support the ParkLands mission of preserving prairie and forest habitat along the Mackinaw making it one of the cleanest rivers in Illinois? \nWe will have a 20 and 50 mile route as well as a 100 kilometer ride.  These routes will go through some of our properties and can be downloaded to the Ride With GPS app. The ride will be supported with a SAG wagon by Bloomington Cycle & Fitness along with strategically placed rest stops along the routes. DESCRIPTION:Take a tour of the Universe at South Chinquapin Bluffs Preserve with the Twin City Amateur Astronomers (tcaa.us) and ParkLands Foundation. Telescopes will be available for viewing\, and laser pointers used to show us around the night sky. Prominent sky objects such as planets\, nebulae\, star clusters\, and galaxies that are visible will be identified and discussed. \nWine\, cheese\, and other light appetizers will be served. DESCRIPTION:***Update! Preserves Participating Change***  \nUpdate: As far as growing seasons go\, no two years are the same. Last year at this time\, the garlic mustard pulling season was almost over. This year it has barely begun! Scouting missions of the participating preserves found some with a decent amount\, while it was just beginning to sprout at others. Chinquapin and Lexington are out. Hayes and now Merwin (South Gate) are in! You will have the opportunity to choose your preferred location when registering. \n~~~ \nGrab your gardening gloves and pick a ParkLands Preserves for a friendly competition to see which preserve can get rid of the most garlic mustard! Garlic mustard is an invasive plant from Europe that crowds out and takes over native spring wildflowers\, including our gorgeous bluebells. The best way to get rid of it is by hand\, pulling it from the ground. All ages can take part and we’ll give you all the training you need to eradicate this species! \nWe will have team leaders ready to go at Hayes and Merwin South Gate. As you walk along the Mackinaw River\, you can learn about the wildlife that calls it home and connect with nature using your five senses by participating in a Scavenger Hunt.
