SUMMARY:Learn about dragonflies and damselflies!
DESCRIPTION:    \nOur annual river event is back as we will again explore the river for a hands-on learning opportunity about the Mackinaw River’s amazing aquatic diversity at ParkLands’ Chinquapin Bluffs Land & Water Reserve . The entrance is on the south side of the preserve and the directions can be found here.  Yes\, we’ll find mussels\, but we’ll also find darters\, microinvertebrates\, macroinvertebrates\, and more. This year we will also be learning about Dragonflies and Damselflies!  This is an event for all ages! \nParkLands volunteers will lead a 0.5 mile hike to the river\, where guests will then wade into the water guided by local stream ecologists in two groups; one surveying mussels and the other will look for macroinvertebrates.  A shuttle will also be available for transport to the river.  This is appropriate for any person able to wade in a foot of water (depending on river levels). Please wear water shoes\, bring a towel\, sunscreen and clothes that you don’t mind getting wet or dirty. We suggest a dry change of clothes for the ride home.  Admission is $5 for ParkLands members and $10 for non-members. \nRegistration Here!\n \n

ParkLands will be hosting our fifth annual bike ride on July 09\, 2022. SUMMARY:Indigenous Culture in the Mackinaw River Valley with Dr. Michael Wiant
DESCRIPTION:A Mackinaw Cache blade and a collection of artifacts from the Mackinaw River \nParkLands welcomes renowned archeologist\, anthropologist\, and historian Dr. Michael Wiant to Chinquapin Bluffs on Saturday\, October 9th.  Dr. Wiant will pull from his extensive research on local Indigenous societies to present on the pre-settlement history of the Mackinaw River valley\, focusing on Native American culture and land use.  As a bonus\, Dr. Wiant will be available immediately following his presentation to identify artifacts brought by guests.  The event will be held under a tent on the grasslands of Chinquapin Bluffs – an area known to have significant Native American history.  Don’t miss this opportunity! \nAdmission: members $15\, non-members $25. \nRegister here!\n  \nDr. Michael D. Wiant is the former Director of the Illinois State Museum.  He is a graduate of Illinois State University (BS Social Science Comprehensive\, MS Sociology-Anthropology) and Northwestern University (MA and PhD Anthropology).  Between his freshman and sophomore year\, a chance meeting with Professor Edward Jelks encouraged Wiant to enroll in Introduction to Prehistoric Archaeology.  The class sowed the seeds of a career that now exceeds forty years. \nAfter graduating from Illinois State University\, Wiant worked for Northwestern University’s Illinois valley archaeology program for a decade before accepting a position at the Illinois State Museum in 1982.  Rising through the ranks of the Anthropology Department\, in 2003 Wiant became the Director of the Illinois State Museum—Dickson Mounds\, a museum that chronicles American history in the Illinois River valley and the Midwest.  He has shared his research in academic publications and through numerous professional and public presentations\, and he has drawn on his museum experience to teach Museum Studies at Illinois State University for many years.  All of the foregoing was built on a solid academic foundation provided by Illinois State University and in particular the faculty of the Department of Sociology-Anthropology. \n*Biography and photo credit: Illinois State University Department of Sociology and Anthropology \nAbout Chinquapin Bluffs \nMore about Dr. Wiant: \n\nMichael Wiant – Historians Speak (Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum)\nReconsidering the Mackinaw Cache: Classic Ohio Hopewell or Early Archaic?  By Michael D. DESCRIPTION:  \nWhether you’re a first time skier or a seasoned expert\, join us Saturday February 20th for a cross-country adventure through one of central Illinois’ finest landscapes.   Admission covers ski rental from WildCountry in Normal (optional)\, guidance from experienced skiers\, refreshments afterwards\, and fundraising support for the ParkLands Foundation.  Snowshoes are also available by choice or if ski supply runs out.  Our shed at Chinquapin Bluffs‘ south gate will serve as a departing point and post-ski hangout for those who wish. \nAdmission: $50 including ski rental\, or $25 to bring your own skis.  Update 2/16: Registration is now closed for those needing rentals due to limits on rental supply. \nRegister Here!\nRegistration is limited to 25 participants and masks must be worn when in the proximity of others. \nSkis and snowshoes should be reserved with WildCountry as soon as possible after registration.  WildCountry staff will help properly size your equipment. \nWe will meet at 9:30 at the Chinquapin Bluffs south shed and hit the trails by 10:00.  Skiing will last approximately two hours. \n
