This year\, kick off your new year resolutions with ParkLands Foundation on a guided New Year’s Day hike at Merwin Preserve!  \nWe will meet at the Merwin South Gate at 10:00 AM to start the hike! SUMMARY:Learn about dragonflies and damselflies!
DESCRIPTION:    \nOur annual river event is back as we will again explore the river for a hands-on learning opportunity about the Mackinaw River’s amazing aquatic diversity at ParkLands’ Chinquapin Bluffs Land & Water Reserve . The entrance is on the south side of the preserve and the directions can be found here.  Yes\, we’ll find mussels\, but we’ll also find darters\, microinvertebrates\, macroinvertebrates\, and more. This year we will also be learning about Dragonflies and Damselflies!  This is an event for all ages! \nParkLands volunteers will lead a 0.5 mile hike to the river\, where guests will then wade into the water guided by local stream ecologists in two groups; one surveying mussels and the other will look for macroinvertebrates.  A shuttle will also be available for transport to the river.  This is appropriate for any person able to wade in a foot of water (depending on river levels). Please wear water shoes\, bring a towel\, sunscreen and clothes that you don’t mind getting wet or dirty. We suggest a dry change of clothes for the ride home.  Admission is $5 for ParkLands members and $10 for non-members. \nRegistration Here!\n \n

DESCRIPTION:Who would like to go for a bike ride through some beautiful restored prairie and woodlands along the Mackinaw River this summer?  That’s right! ParkLands will be hosting our fifth annual bike ride on July 09\, 2022. Won’t you join us and support the ParkLands mission of preserving prairie and forest habitat along the Mackinaw making it one of the cleanest rivers in Illinois? \nWe again will have a 20 and 50 mile route as well as a 100 kilometer ride. SUMMARY:Indigenous Culture in the Mackinaw River Valley with Dr. Michael Wiant
DESCRIPTION:A Mackinaw Cache blade and a collection of artifacts from the Mackinaw River \nParkLands welcomes renowned archeologist\, anthropologist\, and historian Dr. Michael Wiant to Chinquapin Bluffs on Saturday\, October 9th.  Dr. Wiant will pull from his extensive research on local Indigenous societies to present on the pre-settlement history of the Mackinaw River valley\, focusing on Native American culture and land use.  As a bonus\, Dr. Wiant will be available immediately following his presentation to identify artifacts brought by guests.  The event will be held under a tent on the grasslands of Chinquapin Bluffs – an area known to have significant Native American history.  Don’t miss this opportunity! \nAdmission: members $15\, non-members $25. \nRegister here!\n  \nDr. Michael D.
