SUMMARY:Earth Day Volunteer Challenge
DESCRIPTION:        \nThe ParkLands Foundation’s first annual Earth Day Volunteer Challenge (April 22 – 25) aims to raise ecological awareness and make a collective impact on protecting the natural heritage of central Illinois.  Approximately 10 teams of 10 volunteers will compete across numerous ParkLands preserves to remove the most invasive plants\, preserving the diversity of our local ecosystems and enabling growth of native vegetation and wildlife.  The volunteer work will jumpstart important areas of need for 2021 with all sponsorship proceeds funding the ParkLands Foundation’s 2021 educational outreach programs.  The team that removes the most invasive materials will win a ParkLands merchandise and/or a cash prize. \nHow to get involved: \n\nVolunteer – gather your family\, coworkers\, or friends to create a team of 10 (or more) volunteers.  Perfect for team building!  Groups of less than 10 will be paired with other groups to make a team.  Volunteer locations include (click here for map of preserves):\n\nLexington Preserve\nMohr Preserve\nMerwin Preserve (2 locations)\nMoon Preserve\nSweeney Woods Preserve\nChinquapin Bluffs Land & Water Reserve (3 locations)\nLetcher Basin Land & Water Reserve\nHayes Woods Preserve\nKenyon-Baller Woods Preserve\n\n\n\nVolunteers will be provided all necessary equipment and will be paired with an experienced land steward for instruction and safety.  Volunteer teams can pick any three-hour window between April 22 – 25.  After registering\, volunteers will be contacted by ParkLands to coordinate a convenient time for each team. \n          Register to volunteer here!\nQuestions?  Contact Craig Lutes at craig@parklandsfoundation.org or (309) 830-4066 \n\nSponsor – Our local sponsors will support this effort through donations. SUMMARY:Guided Cross-country Ski and Snowshoe at Chinquapin South
DESCRIPTION:  \nWhether you’re a first time skier or a seasoned expert\, join us Saturday February 20th for a cross-country adventure through one of central Illinois’ finest landscapes.   Admission covers ski rental from WildCountry in Normal (optional)\, guidance from experienced skiers\, refreshments afterwards\, and fundraising support for the ParkLands Foundation.  Snowshoes are also available by choice or if ski supply runs out.  Our shed at Chinquapin Bluffs‘ south gate will serve as a departing point and post-ski hangout for those who wish. \nAdmission: $50 including ski rental\, or $25 to bring your own skis.  Update 2/16: Registration is now closed for those needing rentals due to limits on rental supply. \nRegister Here!\nRegistration is limited to 25 participants and masks must be worn when in the proximity of others. \nSkis and snowshoes should be reserved with WildCountry as soon as possible after registration.  WildCountry staff will help properly size your equipment. \nWe will meet at 9:30 at the Chinquapin Bluffs south shed and hit the trails by 10:00.  Skiing will last approximately two hours. \n

DESCRIPTION:Register Now!\nPigtoes and creepers and muckets\, oh my! \nJoin us Saturday\, August 8th at ParkLands’ Hayes Woods Preserve for an interactive educational opportunity for all ages. Local biologists will lead two groups of 15 participants on a shallow wade into the Mackinaw River in search of freshwater mussels\, using the catch (and subsequent release) for a truly unique hands-on learning experience. We will give away mussel posters\, provide light snacks\, and have one-of-a-kind “mussel shirts” for sale. Please choose either the 9:00 or 10:30 time slot on the registration page. \nBesides having fun common names such as heelsplitter\, pimpleback\, and pocketbook\, mussels are an indicator of high water quality. The Mackinaw River is know for its mussel diversity – around two dozen species call the river home. By the end of this event\, you will have a better appreciation for mussels’ fascinating lifecycle and the importance of their Mackinaw River habitat. \nPlease note\, the event will require a 0.50 – 0.75 mile hike to the river’s edge. River activities will begin at exactly 9:00 or 10:30\, so please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your time slot to account for the hike. We are limiting each session to 15 participants to allow proper social distancing.
